the park’s origins

The Cactus Park is officially known as the Mossèn Costa i Llobera Gardens. It is a unique triangular space on the an approach road to Montjuic. The park is named after the renowned Mallorcan poet (1854-1922) and covers a 6 acre site.

Unlike much of the development on Montjuic, the cactus park was not built until 1970 under the supervision of architect Joan Maria Casamor local botanical expert Joan Pañella Bonastre.  Consequently, the latter using the space as an outdoor classroom.

Strangely ignored by locals and tourists alike, the park boasts over 800 species of cacti and in 1987 was included in the New York Times top ten most beautiful gardens on the planet!

In addition to the cacti, there are twelve different olive, palm and fig trees. Some of them are over 200 years old. According to Wikipedia the most notable plants include; Drago, Pitas, Xanthorrhoea and Aloe Brevifolia.

top shooting spot

Basically, as the park is generally quiet and devoid of tourists it is a favourite spot with photographers. Many a fashion shoot has a cactus or two in the background!

Top Tip

The Martinez restaurant next door is expensive but has some great food & views. If you want a cheaper option to eat keep walking to the bar by the cablecar.
