origins of

The Antoni Tapies Foundation home to the biggest collection of the Catalan artists work. Born in 1923, Antoni grew up amongst books. His family was involved in publishing and literature and as a boy he naturally loved to read.

lawyer first

Originally planning on a carrer in the laws courts of Catalonia, he was confined to his house after suffering from a nasty lung disease. He spent his time drawing and painting. Enjoying it so much and finding he had a talent for art, Antoni abandoned the law and by the mid 40s was already exhibiting his work.

bombshell inspiration

The dropping of the first atomic bomb sparked an interest particles, atoms and dust and ‘matter’ has been an important theme in his works ever since. During the 60s and 70s he work took an ‘evolving‘ theme. Series of works on the same same subject, but evolving with each incarnation.

books and guests

The foundation also has visiting installations through out the year and a very extensive library which the public can access. The building is an old publishing house and is the handiwork of Catalan architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner. It was completed in 1881.

Top Tip

There is a little terrace on the roof of the building. It is a great spot to chill your boots and escape the noise of the city for a while.
