Every March<\/strong>, in the barrio of G<\/a>r\u00e0cia<\/a><\/span>\u00a0is the historic festival of Sant Medir<\/strong>. Groups of locals ride around on horses and lorries. They are accompanied by bands of wondering minstrels and throw literally tonnes of sweets to people in the streets. All jolly good fun, especially if you are a five-year old. But it does beg the question, why?<\/p>

Well the story comes in two parts. The first definitely falls firmly on the legend side of the reality fence. Whilst the second is actually recorded as fact.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

\nRunning from The Romans<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Jump back to about\u00a0303 A.D.<\/strong>\u00a0Thereupon we find the then\u00a0Bishop of Barcelona<\/strong>, Severus, being chased by a bunch of Roman soldiers. It was the start of the\u00a0Diocletian Persecution.<\/strong> Undoubtedly a rather dangerous ten year period in Roman history. It involved capturing Christians<\/strong>\u00a0and murdering them on the spot. If you had a coliseum was handy,\u00a0 you could also feed them to the lions and make a few quid on ticket sales.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

\nMagic beans?<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Escaping towards\u00a0Sant Cugat.<\/strong>\u00a0Up in the Collserola Hills north of Barcelona.\u00a0Severus<\/strong>\u00a0came upon a farmer called\u00a0Emeterius<\/strong>\u00a0(Medi in Catalan) planting fava beans in his field. Presumably surprised to see a bishop running past in the middle of the day, Emeterius stopped working to watch.<\/p>

A panting Severus explained his situation. Then surprisingly requested that if the Romans came Emeterius should tell the truth and point them in the right direction.\u00a0As the Bishop dashed off<\/strong>\u00a0miraculously all the beans Emeterius had just been planting suddenly began to grow.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

\nLiar, liar pants on fire<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t

Sure enough the soldiers arrived and Emeterius did as he was told. He explained that he had been\u00a0planting his beans<\/strong>\u00a0when the Bishop had run past and helpfully pointed out where he had gone.<\/p>

Despite this, the soldiers seeing the green shoots in the field, thought that the farmer was taking the mickey out of them. And accordingly arrested the poor fellow and carried on with their chase. In true Roman efficiency<\/strong> both Severus and Emeterius were later killed in Sant Cugat.\u00a0 The bishop firstly being flogged and then having nails hit into his head.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Sant Medir's Miracle Cure<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t

Fast forward a few centuries and the story had\u00a0passed into legend.<\/strong>\u00a0 Consequently both Severus and Emeterius had become\u00a0saints<\/strong>.<\/p>

In\u00a01828<\/strong>, a Baker from Gr\u00e0cia, who was gravely ill and coincidently a devotee to\u00a0Saint Medir<\/strong>, (yes him of the fava beans) made a last ditch pact with his saint. If he was cured he would make a pilgrimage to the hermitage dedicated to the saint in the hills behind the city. Every year on the\u00a03rd<\/sup>\u00a0of March<\/strong>, the saint\u2019s official day.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Well\u00a0two years later<\/strong>\u00a0and the baker was totally cured. And so, on March 3rd<\/sup>\u00a01830 he mounted his horse and rode around\u00a0Gr\u00e0cia. He<\/strong>\u00a0handed out sweets telling everyone he was going to keep his promise.\u00a0At one o\u2019clock he set off into the hills, to pay homage to Sant Medir.<\/a><\/span><\/p>

Now the baker has long since departed this earth but his yearly ritual struck a chord with the locals. So that is why at the\u00a0beginning of March<\/strong>, for one day only, the streets of Gr\u00e0cia will be awash with children, sweets and horse poo!<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t
