Barcelona Tour Highlights
Three American football enthusiasts got together in Badalona on a December 1987’s evening to found the team. They were Pere Moliner, first president of the team, Ramón Ventura and Italian Alfonso Genchi. The team was founded as the Badalona Drags.
Just a few months later, the team was established and the first ever American football game played in Spain was set for March 19th, 1988. The Badalona Drags played the Palermo Cardinals (Italy). The Italians won 18-12. The first organised league in Spain was created with the Drags joining three other teams, L’Hospitalet Pioners, Barcelona Búfals and the defunct Barcelona Boxers. Badalona Dracs won the competition. It was just the first of many championships.
After the 2004 season the team changed their name to the Badalona Dracs.
The Dracs won the last four Spanish titles. With a total of ten LNFA titles they have the best championship record in Spain.
The Barcelona Dragons were an American football team that was a part of the World League of American Football and later in the resurrected NFL Europe. Their home field in Barcelona was the Estadi Olímpic de Montjuic. Later they moved to the FC Barcelona Mini Estadi.
The Dragons were successful on the field. They made it to 4 World Bowls (1991, 1997, 1999, 2001) and won World Bowl V in 1997.
On 11 January 2021, EFL announced that a new franchise in Barcelona would be one of the eight teams to play in the inaugural season of the European League of Football. The original name chosen for the franchise was Gladiators Football. But when the league was finalised, it had reached an agreement with the NFL to use the team names from the old days of NFL Europe. The franchise then rebranded as the Barcelona Dragons.
