Trofeo Conde de Godó

oldest tennis tournament in Spain

The Real Club de Tennis Barcelona was founded in 1899, the same year as FC Barcelona.  To celebrate a major upgrade to the facilities in 1952 the Chairman,  Carlos Godó Valls, Count of Godó, suggested holding an international tournament. The club had hosted an inter club event since 1903 but Carlos wanted the best players to come to the city.

So in 1953, the Conde de Godó Trophy became a reality and over 70 years later it is still going strong.

iconic trophy

Obviously having a competition named after you meant the Count had to supply the cup and boy did he go all out!

The Conde de Godó Trophy was designed in 1953 by jewelers Soler Cabot. Made of sterling silver with an approximate weight of 13 kilos, its base is American oak. The work reproduces a miniature tennis player located on the upper lid, while an ornamental carving covers the entire glass.  Its price is valued at about 36 thousand euros.

The first winner was Vic Seixas from the USA, who defeated Argentinian Enrique Morea in  3 sets. The final set being an epic 22-20 game battle!.

For the last 20 odd years local players have come out on top.  Juan Carlos Ferrero, Carlos Moyà and Tommy Robredo have all claimed the top prize. Between 2005 and 2021, Rafael Nadal has won it 12 times!!

New Spanish sensation Carlos Alcaraz has picked it up in 2022 and 2023.
