Barcelona Patatas Bravas

Barcelona Patatas Bravas. Yummy! This world-famous dish originated in Madrid, after Spain had conquered the Inca empire in 1542 and ‘brought back’ all kinds of weird new stuff.  Fortunately for us, in amongst all the gold and silver, someone sneaked in a few tomatoes!

The original Patatas Bravas recipe called for roughly chopped chunks of fried potatoes with a dressing of ‘a spicy tomato sauce’ and served  hot. ‘Bravas’ which means ‘fierce’ in Spanish, refers to the piquancy of the special spice sauce sloshed over the top!

El 58

Found on the Rambla de Poble Nou, El 58 is an unassuming  tapas bar with a cute interior patio. It’s a simple menu, but everything on it is top notch.  A little bird told us that the Aubergine in honey is  a top dish too!

El Casal

After a spot of gourmet globetrotting, two French brothers, Julien & Simon, set up shop in El Born. They bring a touch of Normandy to all their dishes and the Bravas are no exception. Don’t forget to grab some oysters on the fabulous terraza.

Plaça Victor Balaguer, 5, 08003 Barcelona – Barcelona Patatas Bravas

Bar Mandri

They have been whipping up fine dishes of tapas since 1966 at Bar Mandri. Located in the ‘zona alta,’ it is super popular among locals and well worth the effort to jump a bus or two to get there. If you also like artichokes, their fried version is a must.

Carrer de Mandri, 60, Sarrià-Sant Gervasi, 08022 Barcelona – Barcelona Patatas Bravas

Senyor Vermut

Senyor Vermut should really be in joint top spot. This great Vermuteria has racked up quite a few awards for its Bravas over the years. Truth be told, its all good here. Just order everything!

C/ de Provença, 85, L’Eixample, 08029 Barcelona – Barcelona Patatas Bravas

Bar Tomas Sarrià

Yes, we know everyone knows. Bar El Tomàs de Sarrià is the classic Brava spot in Barcelona. I got taken there in 1998 and it is still as good now as it ever was. Pots are hand-cut and fried in olive oil, then you can go with alioli or dive straight for the spicy stuff! Yup, a secret recipe.

Finally . . . .

There are many fine tapas bars, restaurants and vermuterias across Barcelona. We have listed just a few, but your options are endless. Our advice; if you are close to one of these five, pop in.
