a football soccer mad city

early beginnings

On 22 October 1899, Swiss Hans Gamper placed an advertisement in Los Deportes declaring his wish to form a football club; a positive response resulted in a meeting at the Gimnasio Solé on 29 November. Eleven chaps turned up and Barça was born. Hot on their heels was Sociedad Española de Football, now known as RCD Espanyol.

Initially they played local teams and then in the Catalan football championship (Campionat de Catalunya), a football competition in Catalonia and the first football league in Spain. Well before before La Liga was established in 1929.

other options

Of course the big two dominate football soccer in Barcelona, but there are other clubs, with rich histories, to consider.

CE Europa,  FC Martinec , UE Sant Andreu and Club de Futbol Montañesa to name a few.

Most of these clubs also run womens sections and like FC Barcelona, other sports teams too, not just football.

watching football soccer

Obviously FC Barcelona are the biggest draw with La Liga and European Champions League matches to catch. Tickets are quite expensive, buy them here

But if you just want to watch a game, head to any sports facility in the city on a Sunday morning and you will bound to find something to watch!

Of course either our Barcelona City Tour or Discover Gaudi routes will take you past the Camp Nou
